Spirit Airlines to Discontinue Service at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport

Spirit will end Flights to Fort Lauderdale, Newark and Detroit, effective Oct. 3rd

BIRMINGHAM, AL (September 3, 2025) – Spirit Airlines has notified leaders at BirminghamShuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) of plans to discontinue service in Birmingham, effective October 3rd. The low-fare carrier will end service at BHM and at ten other airports in the U.S. in the wake of a second bankruptcy filing in August.

Spirit Airlines began service at BHM in October of 2024 with nonstop flights to Ft. Lauderdale. The airline later added nonstops to both Newark and Detroit.

In a statement from Spirit Airlines, the company characterized the move as a “difficult decision…” and one that is part of their efforts to “…transform our business and position Spirit for long-term success…”

A spokesperson for Spirit Airlines confirms that customers who have booked flights after the end-of-service date will be notified via email about the change and will be provided information on how to get refunds. Customers can contact Spirit Airlines via the “Contact Us” section of their website https://www.spirit.com/s/contact-us.

As the Spirit flights to Newark and Detroit end next month, travelers are reminded that Delta Airlines currently serves New York City with three nonstops daily from BHM to LaGuardia (LGA). Delta also flies three nonstops a day between BHM and Detroit (DTW).
