Via Airlines’ Inaugural Flights Take Off from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport Marking Exciting Air Service Expansion Milestone

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., 8 a.m. CST – Today Via Airlines launched nonstop service to Pittsburgh, Pa. and Austin, Tx., from the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM), a welcomed milestone in not only the airline’s ongoing expansion across the U.S., but in the local economic renaissance as well. The launch of these two new nonstop routes offers the Birmingham community more connectivity, convenience and affordability with previously nonexistent, high-demand nonstop service to Austin and Pittsburgh.

The new nonstop flights will operate four times each week to/from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport on Via Airlines’ 50-seat Embraer ERJ-145 jets.

Nonstop Birmingham (BHM) to Pittsburgh (PIT):

Days of Operation:              Sunday, Monday, Thursday, and Friday
Depart BHM:                        9:06 a.m.
Arrive PIT:                            11:36 a.m.

These flights will move travelers to and from these new destinations far faster and more economically than existing options, including traveling by car.

“Committing this new air service to Birmingham is playing out to be incredibly rewarding for all involved parties,” said Cynthia Melendez, Via Airlines Marketing Manager. “This is truly an amazing city bustling with economic opportunity and we’re thrilled about the opportunity to provide both its business and leisure travelers with the nonstop jet service they demand and the high-quality service they deserve. We at Via Airlines take pride in our community focus and look forward to a long relationship with the city as we continue to offer new destinations from the Birmingham airport,” added Cynthia.

New service to Raleigh Durham International Airport is scheduled to launch Apr. 28, 2019. Melendez said it is likely Via Airlines will add more destinations out of Birmingham in the future.

“We are very excited to welcome Via Airlines to the Birmingham community,” said Sylvester Lavender, Birmingham Airport Authority’s Interim President and CEO.  “Working together with the business community has been a positive experience as we were very strategic in our approach to gain new nonstop service from Birmingham.  We’re proud to see these new routes come to fruition, making it easier for Birmingham to connect with more economic opportunities.”

Delivering Birmingham more air service opportunities, which is not easy for smaller airports to secure in today’s air service environment, would not be possible without the support from the Birmingham Airport Authority, the Mayor’s office, the convention and visitors bureau, the business community, and the partnering destination airports. Travelers are encouraged to support the flights in an effort to aid the potential of more flights being offered from BHM.
