Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport

Security

Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport recommends that travelers follow the guidelines issued by the airlines with regard to advance check-in.

Most airlines recommend that passengers arrive at the airport 60 to 90 minutes prior to departure. Some airlines may stop checking bags up to 30 minutes prior to departure and begin the boarding process earlier in order to comply with these new federal regulations.

Please note:

  • No unattended vehicles are permitted in front of the terminal. Passengers may be dropped off and baggage unloaded on the upper level roadway, but the vehicle must absolutely be attended at all times. No exceptions. Violators will be towed. Arriving passengers may be greeted on the public side of the security checkpoint, in baggage claim, or outside the terminal in the parking lot.
  • Passengers not checking bags should check with the airline when making a reservation or prior to departure to obtain proper documentation.
  • Access beyond the security checkpoint is limited to passengers with a valid boarding pass and picture I.D. If you have a medical, parental or other specific need to accompany a ticketed passenger, please check at the airline ticket counter to determine how to proceed.
  • To expedite the screening process, passengers are advised to reduce the metal they wear through the checkpoints. Please also limit the number and type of electronic equipment you carry with you. This includes cellular phones, paging devices, laptop computers, CD players, electronic toys and games. The necessity of screening these devices will create delays passing through the checkpoint. Whenever possible, place these items in your checked luggage.
  • No knives or cutting instruments of any length or composition are permitted past the security checkpoint. If you have a medical condition that requires you to carry a needle and/or syringe on your person or in your carry-on baggage, you must have the medication that requires such injection on your person. The medication must be packaged with a pharmaceutical label identifying the medication. Walking canes and umbrellas, safety razors (disposable razors), and eyelash curlers are permitted in carryon. PLEASE NOTE: Any items surrendered at the security checkpoint will not be returned. There is a FedEx drop box located in the Business Center for passengers who want to mail unauthorized items to their home.
  • Carryon luggage is limited to one bag and one personal item (purse or briefcase).
  • All luggage, checked and carryon, is subject to random inspection.
